An Analysis of the Assessment and Implementation of Green Claims
Overview
CRB, in collaboration with International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), is working on a project to assess the implementation of green claims. A case study will be developed to examine challenges, opportunities, and the support needed for businesses to comply with these regulations. IISD is also developing a policy brief on the reliability of sustainability claims, with CRB contributing research and stakeholder insights to the India-focused section.


Objectives
- Provide feedback on IISD’s policy brief outline and research questions.
- Act as a peer reviewer for the India section of the policy brief.
- Organise a session at CRB’s Annual Sustainability Conference on compliance with green claims regulations.
- Engage stakeholders to gather insights on regulatory challenges and best practices.
- Develop a case study on the private sector’s implementation of green claims in India.
Events
IISD and One Planet Network supported and participated in a session at CRB’s India and Sustainability Standards summit, co-hosted by CRB and HUL. The session was titled ‘Enabling Sustainable Choice among Retail Consumers in India: Perspectives from Policy and Practice’. Watch the video here.
Session’s objectives were:
- Discuss the role of science, innovation, and best practices in enhancing consumer trust in sustainability claims.
- Facilitate dialogue on policy and business strategies for supporting sustainable consumption, including regulatory needs and compliance challenges.
- Examine global and national trends on the reliability of claims (Green Claims, Greenwashing, Greenhushing) and their relevance for India.
- Explore the importance of sustainability information in helping consumers make informed choices, particularly in retail and e-commerce.
- Identify policy priorities and business actions to strengthen sustainability claims and encourage responsible consumer engagement.
- Discuss the best practices relevant to India, policies and business strategies for sustainable consumption, and the role of science, innovation, and circular economy in shaping choices.

CRB and IISD are co-authoring a case study analysing ho w businesses in India are adapting to green claims regulations. The study involves interviews and consultations with industry stakeholders to understand their needs, challenges, and the role of sustainability standards in ensuring compliance.
By fostering evidence-based discussions and developing knowledge products, this collaboration aims to provide strategic insights for policymakers and businesses to enhance the credibility of sustainability claims in India.
