Enhancing Circularity, Ethical Decarbonisation & Social Wellbeing in India’s Built Environment
Overview
The Design for Freedom (DFF), an initiative of the Grace Farms, has partnered with the Centre for Responsible Business to elevate discourse and engagements in India’s built environment on circularity, ethical decarbonisation and social wellbeing. The purpose is to strategically engage with key stakeholders and enhance implementation of the aforementioned responsibility principles in India’s built environment.
Objectives
- Prioritise India specific issues, challenges, good practices and solutions
- Elevate dialogues, capacity building and awareness programmes amongst key stakeholders on the application of DFF principles: circularity, ethical decarbonisation and social wellbeing in India’s built environment
- Identify pilots and initiatives to enhance the discourse and feed into policy inputs on circularity, ethical decarbonisation and social wellbeing in India’s built environment
Events
Nandini Sharma, Director, CRB and Neha Tomar, Senior Programme Manager, CRB, represented Centre for Responsible Business at the 4th Annual Design for Freedom Summit 2025. The summit convened 50+ global voices to address forced and child labour in building material supply chains through panels, roundtables, and site tours. In partnership with Design for Freedom by Grace Farms, CRB continues to champion ethical decarbonisation, circularity, and social well-being in India’s construction and infrastructure sectors.
The objectives of the session were:
- Deliberate the role relevant stakeholders can play towards India’s 2047 mission, in the buildings and infrastructure sectors
- Share Design for Freedom’s principles on circularity, ethical decarbonisation and social wellbeing in the buildings and infrastructure sectors and deliberate its relevance in India
- Demonstrate Design for Freedom principles in action in India through The Brij project, by Serendipity Arts

A Roundtable was conducted with over 18 experts from various backgrounds in the built environment, including private players, academic representatives, architects and designers, civil societies amongst others. The purpose of the Roundtable was to identify and deliberate the priority sectors and potential thematic areas for the DFF and CRB partnership. Based on the inputs received in the Roundtable the team fleshed out its strategic interventions.
A two-day field visit was organised for Design for Freedom by Grace Farms in November 2024. The purpose of the field visit was to understand the bamboo value chain and its scope as alternative building material. The field visit was undertaken in Kudal, Maharashtra where KONBAC’s value chain was explored and its value chain partners were met with.
